War in the Garden

It's been years since I made a garden. So why pick this one? Was it because of the excessive amount of snow and moisture we had, heck their were only two half dead weeds in the whole thing. The house I live in now was vacant for over thirty years. The neighbor lady decided the back part of this vacant place would be a great place to put her garden, and it was. The ground is fertile and it improved the looks of the place.

Earlier in the year she called and said she wasn't feeling well enough to plant her garden this year. We didn't mind if she did plant it on our property, what's neighbors for? Anyway it did improve the looks of the place. Besides we were to busy to mess with a garden and every once in awhile she would bring something to us from this precious place.

I called upon my sister who only wanted a small garden to save some seed for mine. I also mentioned tomato plants and a couple of squash plants. I travel out to the farm nearly every day and to my amazement sis would plant the garden when I was gone. Soon I had five tomato plants, three cucumbers, two rows of parsnips, celery, zucchini, pumpkin and a winter squash plant. And let us not forget the big row of green beans. Whoa!

It seems my sister's dream of a sucker had come true. Who was going to water this garden and keep it weed free? Well you guessed it.
Well the zuccini and winter squash plants took off like a hare with a dog on it's tail. Standing nearly waist high it soon became apparent that this hugh garden needed more water than it was getting. I am still pruning the winter squash to save it's life, and the zucchini's buckeled under their own weight. Both are making some progress but the rains need to return.

The real problem came from the cucumber and winter squash plants. It seems my sis wanted to save space, so we didn't have to BIG a garden. She started by planting in a small space, about four feet wide. Soon the cucumbers were crawling through the zucchini and tomato plants and the zucchini's were pushing the beans over. I found a cucumber under one of the zucchini plants bottom leaves. These nasty things were wrapping stranglers around every plant and weed it came to. The winter squash were doing the same thing. I now have a winter squash hanging inside a small tree.
So after unwrapping these pesky vines from my tomato, zucchini and a maple tree I made it very clear. Read my lips, there will be no more 'war in my garden'. But what plant listens?
